One of the main aspects that we loved about Ernest Cline‘s 2011 science fiction cult classic Ready Player One was the heavy needle drops of 80’s cultural references from Pac-Man to D & D to Knight Rider. The first trailer just dropped and gave off a very Tron meets Grand Theft Auto vibe. Light on 80’s feeling, but heavy with the 80’s cameos.
The way anticipated film (which comes out on March 30, 2018), tells the tale of Wade Watts and his online pals as they attempt to find Halliday’s coveted Easter Egg. Their quest is not only for financial gains but to save the virtual (and real) world from an evil corporation. Legit goals.
This first real look at Steven Spielberg’s take on the dystopian world 2044 of Ready Player One appears to be soaked more in modern day CGI than Paco Rabanne.
In the several views of the trailer we spotted the Iron Giant, a Say Anything boom box moment, and a tricked out DeLorean all to the strains of Van Halen’s “Jump” and Depeche Mode. They did throw in some post 80’s pop culture references such as Tracer from Overwatch and a modern version of Joker and Harley Quinn. So really, there’s something for everyone.
